Mama Going Green initiative

Women are disproportionately affected by climate change because of socioeconomic and cultural. Research has shown that when women are actively engaged in climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts, those efforts are more likely to be effective and sustainable. This is because women are often more attuned to local conditions and needs, and they tend to invest a greater proportion of their resources into their families and communities. It is for these reasons that RNZ has initiated a program dubbed Mama going green (Mama is a Swahili word meaning Mother), with an aim to onboard women across the country in climate action.

MAMA GOING GREEN OBJECTIVES

Gender inclusion

Gender inclusion is crucial in the fight against climate change. Climate change has differential impacts on men and women and addressing these requires considering the unique perspectives and experiences of each gender. Women, who are often disproportionately affected by the impacts of climate change, can provide valuable contributions to mitigation and adaptation efforts. By including women in decision-making and ensuring gender-sensitive policies and programs, we can create more effective, equitable, and sustainable solutions to address the climate crisis.

Improved Standard of Living

Investing in clean energy access for women helps improve their quality of life and contributes to more sustainable and equitable communities.

Economic Empowerment

Contracting women to prepare tree seedlings will provide them with a much-needed alternative income. Switching to solar for irrigation makes farming cheaper, hence more income.

Sustainability

The ultimate goal of Mama going green is to enhance mitigation and adaptation to climate change. All the above-mentioned projects are geared towards achieving climate goals as well as decent human life.
